Discovering the Power of Love: My Journey Through Yoga and Healing
Hello, I’m Koya Webb, and if there’s one thing that defines me, it’s love. I’m an all-in kind of person, pouring passion and dedication into everything I do, all in the hope of making the world a brighter place.
From Humboldt to the Olympic Dream
I grew up in Humboldt, Tennessee, where my early years were marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence. Whether it was in academics or on the track, I committed myself wholeheartedly to my goals. This dedication led to a Track and Field scholarship, fueling my dream of winning an Olympic Gold Medal.
However, life had different plans in store for me.
The Setback That Changed Everything
One day, while I was walking home from class, I was struck by an unbearable pain in my lower back. It turned out to be a stress fracture—an injury that not only sidelined me physically but also challenged me emotionally and mentally.
This setback was a pivotal moment in my life, ultimately guiding me toward yoga. After a particularly emotional day in class, my instructor encouraged me to seek help from a counselor. Although I can’t recall her name, I vividly remember her suggestion: “Try yoga.” Coming from a traditional Southern Baptist background, I was skeptical. I associated yoga with spirituality I didn’t understand.
Embracing the Practice
My first yoga class was nothing short of awkward. I felt like a fish out of water—tight muscles and an uncoordinated body made the experience challenging. Yet, as I began to follow the instructor’s guidance, focusing on my breath with deep inhalations and exhalations, everything changed. That simple connection with my breath was transformative, and I discovered a new friend in yoga.
After recovering, it took me a while to reintegrate yoga into my life—I can be pretty stubborn. But post-college, another injury brought me back to my practice. This time, I was committed, and I haven’t looked back since.
Sharing the Magic of Yoga
I couldn’t ignore the profound impact yoga had on my life, and I felt a strong urge to share its transformative power with others. In 2008, I completed my yoga teacher training, vowing to spread the healing benefits of yoga to anyone willing to listen. By 2017, I had launched Get Loved Up Yoga School, a comprehensive yoga and holistic health training program.
I noticed that many yoga teacher trainings often overlooked the spiritual aspect, so I made it a priority in my curriculum. I wanted to create a program that went beyond just asanas, encompassing essential elements of a yogic lifestyle, like plant-based nutrition and social justice—principles that align with ahimsa, or nonviolence.
Transforming Trauma into Strength
As a wellness leader and practitioner, I’ve learned that we all possess the ability to transform traumatic experiences into sources of strength. Whether the pain is physical or emotional, we can channel it into something beautiful.
Practicing breathwork, meditation, and yoga has been essential for my healing journey, allowing me to overcome trauma, anxiety, and depression. I’m passionate about empowering my community to align their lives with love, even during the darkest times.
The Spirit of Breath
I truly believe that breath is spirit. The more we connect with our breath, the more we open ourselves to divine guidance. I look forward to connecting with more individuals in the Glo community, hearing their stories, and serving as a guide in their journey to intentional breathwork.
A Journey of Love and Healing
Life’s challenges have a way of shaping us, and through my journey, I’ve discovered that love is at the core of everything we do. Yoga has not only healed me but has also empowered me to uplift others. Together, we can transform our pain into purpose and live a life filled with love, connection, and healing.
If you’re looking to start your own journey or simply want to connect, I invite you to join me in this beautiful exploration of breath and spirit. Let’s discover the magic of love together.
