GLO Teachers: Yoga and Fitness Experience

Glo teacher Ivorie Jenkins on following her passions

Passions: Travel. Time for Pause. Motherhood.

Not long ago, I embarked on a solo adventure that changed my life—a three-month trek through the vibrant landscapes of India. I affectionately named this experience Soul Travel, as I found myself on a quest for something deeper, something I struggled to articulate. Throughout my travels, I chronicled my adventures in a blog titled In Search of the POLKA DOTTED UNICORN. This whimsical moniker was a gift from a dear friend who, during a heartfelt conversation about our personalities, playfully dubbed me a “polka dotted unicorn.”

The Essence of the Polka Dotted Unicorn

To my friend, the Polka Dotted Unicorn (PDU) symbolizes a free spirit—a being that frolics through the woods, shielding its innocence from the lurking shadows of fear. This depiction resonated with me, as it encapsulated qualities I deeply wanted to nurture in myself. My journey through India was an attempt to embody this spirit, allowing me to step away from the luxuries of my life in Los Angeles and embrace new experiences and perspectives.

Experiencing Freedom and Transformation

Traveling alone in India was nothing short of liberating. Each day unfolded with new challenges and surprises, from navigating bustling markets to meditating in serene temples. This journey wasn’t just about exploring geographical locations; it was a profound dive into understanding what it means to be truly present and to embrace life’s uncertainties.

By shedding the familiar comforts of my daily routine, I discovered a refreshing sense of freedom—a reminder that life is about more than just routines; it’s about connecting with our true selves and finding joy in the simple moments. This insight is something I strive to share in my yoga classes.

Inspiring Freedom in Yoga Classes

In my classes, I aim to create an environment that mirrors the liberating experiences I had during my travels. My goal is for students to feel a sense of freedom within their bodies and minds. It’s about more than mastering poses; it’s about reconnecting with what truly matters. I want my students to remember the joy of loving deeply, laughing freely, and complimenting themselves.

I often remind my students that the universe is working in their favor. It’s perfectly acceptable to take a break, relax, and appreciate the gift of the present moment. Ultimately, I want them to tap into their inner Polka Dotted Unicorn.

The freedom-of-being I experienced on this journey is what I aim to recreate in my Yoga classes. I want students to feel free in both body and mind.

Breaking the Cycle of Constant Busyness

I recently came across a powerful concept introduced by meditation teacher Sebene Selassie: the pathology of productivity. This notion refers to our relentless need to stay busy, equating our accomplishments with our self-worth. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that we’re not doing enough or that we’re not enough. Instead of addressing the deeper needs behind our ambitions, we keep pushing ourselves to grind harder.

This lifestyle not only wreaks havoc on our bodies but also prevents us from pausing to appreciate the beauty and mystery that surrounds us in the present moment. Think about it: how often do we overlook the blooming flowers, the soothing sound of rain, or the laughter of a child playing nearby? If you’re anything like me, you’ve lost count of the moments that slipped by unnoticed because we were too focused on what’s next or what has already passed.

To counteract this relentless cycle of busyness, I turned to meditation and restorative yoga. These practices encourage us to pause and reflect. Initially, I was astonished by how much I gained from doing less and how much closer I felt to my PDU when I practiced stillness.

Navigating the Season of Motherhood

Over the past three years, my travels have also taken a back seat. Two years ago, I welcomed my son, Asa, into the world, which meant my adventurous spirit shifted its focus to nurturing this new life. Life has seasons, and I find myself in one that involves planting seeds, tilling the soil, and staying close to home.

Honestly, the transition was initially frustrating. As someone who identifies as a free spirit, motherhood felt like a sudden constriction imposed by the universe. Don’t get me wrong—I adore my son and feel all the warmth and joy that first-time parents express. But the reality hit me: I would never sleep soundly again, my time was no longer my own, and my kitchen had turned into a bustling restaurant catering to an insatiable little being!

Fortunately, the teachings of yoga equipped me with the tools to navigate the highs and lows of motherhood. After about a year and countless moments of meditation, I began to see motherhood as a new path of Dharma, one rich with its own twists and turns, much like my journey through India. The innocence, joy, and spirited freedom of the PDU emerged in my son, as children inherently embody that playful essence.

Nurturing Our Inner Unicorns Together

Now, my role is to nurture the PDU within both myself and my son. Each day is a reminder that even within the confines of daily life, we can find moments of wonder, creativity, and connection.

As I continue to grow and learn in this beautiful, chaotic world of motherhood, I invite you to explore your own journey. Embrace your inner Polka Dotted Unicorn, and allow yourself the freedom to thrive amidst life’s challenges.

In conclusion, whether you’re navigating the exhilarating world of travel or the tender chaos of parenthood, remember that every experience is part of your unique journey. By staying present and open to the possibilities around you, you can cultivate a life filled with joy, connection, and a vibrant spirit—just like that enchanting polka dotted unicorn.
