It seems a distant past where live human interaction was the norm. We would commute to school or work, follow that with parties or restaurants, and spend some of that time looking at screens. We might have to look at a computer for work or we’d check our phones a little too much. But NOW? Now it feels like our entire lives have turned into one long video meeting. Since both work and fun are taking place online, it’s all starting to blur together. Even for those of us who used to do our best to stay away, it seems that for the unforeseeable future, screens it is.
And with that extra screen time comes eye strain. Our first suggestion is to implement what is called the “20-20-20 Rule.” Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and focus on something 20 feet away from you, for (you guessed it) 20 seconds. This should alleviate much of the problem.
In addition to taking breaks whenever possible, use your screen’s dark mode feature. When you’re using Glo, take advantage of Glo’s own dark mode setting. Simply head to the Preferences tab of your Account Settings and set your theme to “relax.”
While these tips help, if you’re on your screen all day your eyes will likely get fatigued. Here’s a little something you can do right now to soothe them:
- Sit tall and rub your palms together vigorously. Faster! Rub them together so quickly that they begin to build up some heat. This is your prana or “life force energy” building up. Keep rubbing for 5, 4, 3, 2, and…
- Close your eyes and place the heels of your palms on your closed eyes. If it feels okay, you can apply just a little gentle pressure. Feel the heat of your hands drifting into your eyes, dispersing healing energy.
- Keep your hands on your eyes as you bring your attention to your whole eye and eventually the back of your eyes. Keep your attention there. Consciously relax the back of your eyes. Soften the whole eye. Stay here for 5, 4, 3, 2, and…
- Allow your hands to drop. Take a few deep breaths with your eyes closed. Breathe into your eyes…
- Release your hands and blink your eyes open, reminding yourself to keep your gaze soft in everything you “lay your eyes on.”
- Repeat as necessary, up to once an hour.
